Diaper Cakes

Is it just me, or are Diaper Cakes -- Baby Cakes Made Entirely From Diapers! kind of a disgusting concept?

May 8, 2007 - Tulips in bloom, under the bay window.

The morning is the only time the sun truly shines on my front garden, but it is spectacular when it does. I planted these tulips last fall. They're almost completely faded now (May 18) but even for the short time they are in bloom they do so much to lift my spirits and make my home beautiful.

Is It Desmonds Eye?

IsItDesmondsEye, originally uploaded by Deluxx.

There is some speculation that the eye shown in "The Man Behind the Curtain" is Desmond's. Although it's obviously not Locke's or Ben's (they're both blue-eyed) I am not convinced it's Desmond's.

Is Jacob Locke? Is Locke Jacob?

IsJacobLocke, originally uploaded by Deluxx.

There is speculation that the shadowy Jacob is actually Locke himself, in another time/dimension/etc. (one that includes hair, apparently). There is a resemblance, for sure... Although Locke seems to have more forhead wrinkles and a slightly less bulbous tip on his nose?

Whatever happened to the paperless office?

I think I need to have a tag sale.

Coram Boy on Saturday

Thanks to free tickets, Weenie, Alien, Sneaky J and I went to seeCoram Boy on Broadway on Saturday night. It was definitely unusual but turned out to be really good. Going in, we knew nothing about the show, which may have been a mistake. If you're going to see a show that takes place in 1740 and features choral music sung by pre-pubescent boys played by women, you might want to know that going in. But after a slow start, the play finally got going with a gripping adventure story.

After the show, we stopped at the diner for eats. I haven't done that in years, which made me feel old.

How did Britney lose her skirt?

I understand that Britney has problems. And her fashion sense has never been great. But how is it that in some of these pictures she has lost her skirt?

Is it possible to watch this and not want one?

No one belongs here more than you.

No one belongs here more than you is one of the most endearing bits of self-promotion I've ever seen. It's also a very clever site, which made me want to buy the book. And isn't that the point? Author Miranda July's whiteboard storytelling is so endearing!

(Beer) Bread

(Beer) Bread, originally uploaded by phil_g.

Phil_g scanned and posted his mother's entire recipe collection. What an amazing labor of love. I might scan and post a few favorites, but it's also making me think of this great collection I found at an estate sale. It was someone's loving lifetime collection of recipes -- some handwritten, some clipped -- bound messily into a black notebook. I couldn't believe no one in the family of the deceased thought it was worth saving, and I felt like it needed rescuing. I also thought there would be some real gems in it. So of course I bought it. Now I'm thinking I need to go review it again, and look for some of those gems.

Street light in the rain

street light in rain, originally uploaded by Deluxx.

It rained, and rained, and rained. Last night and today. Seven and a half inches, they said. All the streets and parkways were flooded. I took this photo last night, through the window. I used the "aquarium" profile setting on the camera; it felt appropriate. The rain was sheeting down and the ground was completely saturated. Water puddled everywhere. I like the texture of the wet tree on the right.

Today I worked at home because of the flooding. I am behind on a project that is due Thursday (and I am going to be in an all-day meeting on Wednesday). I'm a little panicked. It's just so slow-going, this project. It's a very tedious subject. I have trouble getting motivated because I am just not interested.

Actually, it went great. I feel all warm and fuzzy. People said really nice things about me. Even the suggested "areas for growth" were reasonable and totally constructive.

I don't know why I was so anxious.

Tis the season

My teeth ache

I am a little bit addicted to Crest whitestrips. I mean, not in any really weird way, but I really, really like having white teeth. But my teeth are a wee bit sensitive as a result. I will post a picture of my chiclets tomorrow. I'm too sleepy to get the camera tonight.

I have a problem with going to bed. I stay up too late every night. Tonight is no exception.

Holy USB!

Lost work day

Yesterday was a lost work day. Couldn't get anything done. I swore I'd come in today and be productive, and I'm doing this instead...

Catching up

Friday night we had dinner at the Greek restaurant with Doc Hot and Original Cyn. There was no one, really, no one there. The 3 people who were there when we arrived left and for the hour and a half we were there, no other customers came. It was spooky. Original Cyn was convinced that there were gunmen in the back holding everyone hostage. Of course, the food was pretty bad, so maybe there's a reason.

Saturday, we picked up the new car. Yowza. Drove it around; went to Weenie and Alien's. W was really great about being excited for us. Drove her around the block with the top down and got cheers from passer-by (it was about 27 degrees out). Saturday PM Gertrude came over for dinner and a movie. Made lasagna. The Jewish mother in me wanted to feed her seconds and thirds. I worry that she's not eating, that she doesn't take care of herself. It was nice to see her though; I really miss having her around. Still.

Then we went to see Freedom Writers, which tugged all my heartstrings this way and that. The movie doesn't stand up to much evaluation, but for the time-being, I was moved and entertained.

Sunday, I got up and read the paper while the other 2 slept. Then J went for bagels and we had a little brunch before sending Gertrude home with leftovers. Made guacamole and took it over to Deb's for dinner. Had dinner with just her and her man, who we decided we like very much. Great to see her; haven't seen enough of her lately.

So it was a nice weekend for seeing friends.

Bad bad bank

Today we had a huge hassle with the bank when they returned a check they shouldn't have, then withdrew it again... it was just ridiculous. J can't let it go and has been angry all night. She doesn't have the greatest coping skills. Sometimes I know I push things aside too much, but she doesn't do it enough.

Tomorrow we pick up the new car. CRAZY! Gertrude is coming over, yay. At least, I think so. Sometimes she changes her mind, but I hope she won't. We're having lasagna.

It's co-o-o-o-old. I don't like it.

Hey Ya! Charlie Brown Style

Such a cute little mashup.

Thursday, January 18, 2007

Um, actually, I did.

Yep. Got the Miata. Pick it up Saturday.

What have I done?!

And, naturally, since I bought a 2-seater sportscar convertible this morning, it started snowing this afternoon...

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

On the other hand... maybe I do.

So now I'm thinking about this little sexy thing. It's crazy inexpensive compared to the luxury autos I've looked at. There's a pimped out 2006 sitting on the dealer's floor, and they just want to get rid of it, so they're cutting the price. It's totally impractical. No room for anything. But I already have a practical car. We have a nice, safe, useful, 4-wheel-drive, comfortable mini-SUV. The perfectly practical, suitable, logical car.

This car? It's sex.

Today was an ordinary day at work. The commuting with Buttons is working out fairly well so far. After work, we went to drop the (old) car off for servicing and there was the Miata... I've seen it there before, and it's called to me many times. It really wants to be my car.

Maybe I don't want a convertible after all

Spent Saturday shopping for a convertible. This is the Volvo C70, the one I was sure I wanted. I met with the dealer and picked out all my options, but in the end, I'm having second thoughts. It's just too much money, and the reality isn't as fun as the fantasy (expensive service, premium gasoline)...

Went to dinner Sat with N&C and W&A. It was way too noisy. Not a good pick for a Saturday night, especially since it was a sports bar and it was the NFL playoffs. But hey, the food's good... I'll never hear the end of it from N&C, I'm sure.

Everyone was really annoying about my car shopping. Too many opinions. Next time I want to do something like this, I'm not going to tell anyone until it's done. No wonder people don't tell people their baby names before the baby is born.

Nose

Nellynose.JPG, originally uploaded by Deluxx.

I haven't done a very good job of daily posts. It has been a challenge to post a photo every day that doesn't include people. It made me realize how important my friends are in my life. But I feel it's never a good idea to post pictures of people in a public, non-protected blog. It's a violation of their privacy.

So instead, the other most important creatures, my dogs, make repeated appearances. Here, Nelly's nose. She was quite annoyed with me for taking this photo.

Pansies in January

orangepansy.JPG, originally uploaded by Deluxx.

How can something that feels so right be so wrong? I love this weather. It's 59 degrees right now. On January 5. In New York. Can I please just enjoy it guilt-free, and forget the global implications?

These pansies are still blooming like it's September. And so am I. I suspect we'll both wilt as soon as the temperature drops.

The Christmas decorations must come down. I wanted a photo of the chandelier with all its icicles before they have to go.

Lunched with H today and heard about her relationship woes. Wonder if she'll really end it this time.

Can't get motivated at all today at work. I'm procrastinating badly. It's just so dull...
